Business Analyst (Accounting)

This is a 3-4 month contract role with the potential for extension. The position is hybrid in Bloomington, MN, with a minimum of two days onsite per week. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Our client is seeking an experienced Business Analyst to evaluate and improve accounting operations and financial workflows. This consultant will work closely with accounting, finance, reporting, and data teams to identify inefficiencies, reduce manual effort, improve process consistency, and uncover opportunities for automation and modernization.

The ideal candidate combines strong accounting knowledge with experience in business analysis, process improvement, reporting, or operational consulting. They are naturally curious, practical, and skilled at understanding complex processes and translating them into meaningful improvements. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential, particularly when introducing new approaches to teams accustomed to more traditional ways of working. Success will require the ability to build credibility and influence change collaboratively.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate accounting operations related to wire transfers, funding, reconciliations, reporting, and financial data management.

• Identify gaps, bottlenecks, manual processes, redundant work, and process inconsistencies.

• Shadow accounting team members and document current-state processes, workflows, reporting, controls, and responsibilities.

• Analyze reporting workflows, data refresh timing, and financial reporting effectiveness.

• Partner with accounting, finance, data, and reporting stakeholders to understand business challenges and opportunities for improvement.

• Develop process maps, workflow documentation, recommendations, and implementation roadmaps.

• Assess opportunities for automation, enhanced reporting, and AI-assisted process improvements.

• Collaborate with reporting resources to develop and improve operational and accounting reports.

• Provide actionable recommendations that improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability across accounting operations.

• Present findings and recommendations to leadership and key stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Meaningful accounting experience is required; accounting knowledge gained solely through education is not sufficient.

• Experience as a Business Analyst, Process Analyst, Continuous Improvement Consultant, or similar role.

• Proven ability to document current-state processes and recommend operational improvements.

• Strong understanding of accounting operations, reconciliations, financial reporting, and transactional workflows.

• Experience evaluating complex business processes and identifying efficiency opportunities.

• Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.

• Ability to build trust and credibility with accounting and finance professionals.

• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work onsite approximately two days per week onsite.

Preferred Skills

• Experience within mortgage banking, financial services, treasury, funding, wire-transfer, ACH, or audit environments.

• Power BI reporting and analytics experience.

• Experience working with accounting systems and financial reporting platforms.

• Experience with Loan Vision or similar accounting software.

• Demonstrated success identifying and implementing automation opportunities.

• Familiarity with AI-assisted business process improvement initiatives.

• Prior consulting experience focused on accounting operations or process transformation
