Senior Modern Work Engineer

Emergent Software is looking for a Senior Modern Work Engineer with deep experience delivering secure Microsoft 365 Modern Work solutions. This role leads mid- to large-sized client engagements from discovery through delivery, serves as the primary technical point of contact, and translates business requirements into scalable, supportable solutions. A qualified candidate brings strong consulting communication, architecture, automation, and troubleshooting skills; can guide teams and mentor engineers; and proactively manages delivery risks, dependencies, and outcomes. This 100% remote position is ideal for a smart, passionate, and curious self-starter.

Primary Duties

• Engagement Leadership and Accountability: Lead mid- to large-sized engagements end-to-end by establishing scope, sequencing work, setting expectations, monitoring delivery, and serving as the primary technical point of contact. Own delivery outcomes for assigned workstreams and proactively surface risks, dependencies, decisions, and changes.

• Client Communication and Requirements: Facilitate structured discovery and technical discussions with client stakeholders. Communicate risks, dependencies, technical decisions, and solution options clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Validate feasibility and translate business objectives into requirements that are traceable to delivery.

• Architecture and Solution Design: Contribute to solution architecture and prepare deployment plans aligned with organizational standards. Design secure, scalable Microsoft 365 solutions across identity, endpoint management, collaboration, data protection, and productivity workloads.

• Security and Copilot Readiness: Elevate security posture by designing and enforcing identity, endpoint, and data protection controls within projects. Implement Copilot-ready controls and safe-use patterns that support responsible adoption, appropriate access, and information protection.

• Standardization and Automation: Standardize deployment patterns such as Intune and Windows 365 baselines, Defender configurations, and collaboration governance. Apply PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, and code-as-configuration practices to improve repeatability, quality, and operational supportability.

• Problem Solving and Technical Leadership: Diagnose complex issues, propose practical solutions, and prevent recurrence through documentation and process improvements. Unblock complex technical challenges without routine escalation and mentor engineers through solution design, automation, troubleshooting, and delivery best practices.

• Teamwork and Practice Contribution: Lead small teams or workstreams, promote collaboration, and mentor junior staff. Partner with Sales and Project Management on estimates, assumptions, risks, and delivery planning. Contribute reusable runbooks, knowledge assets, reference configurations, and lessons learned to the Modern Work practice.

Required Qualifications

• Previous consulting or professional services experience, including working directly with customer teams of varying sizes.

• Proven success leading mid- to large-sized client engagements or complex workstreams from discovery and requirements through implementation, validation, handoff, and adoption.

• Demonstrated accountability for delivery outcomes, including proactive communication of status, risks, dependencies, decisions, and scope changes.

• Strong technical and non-technical communication skills, both written and verbal, with confidence facilitating client discussions and explaining decisions, risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs.

• Ability to conduct structured requirements sessions, validate feasibility, document decisions, and maintain clear traceability from business objectives to delivered solutions.

• Advanced experience implementing and managing the Microsoft 365 platform, including Entra ID, Microsoft 365 administration, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Intune, Windows 365, Defender, and Purview.

• Ability to contribute to solution architecture and create practical deployment plans aligned with security, scalability, operational support, and established standards.

• Competence in at least three Modern Work or Security solution areas, with advanced expertise in at least one.

• Working knowledge of identity, endpoint, collaboration, and data protection controls, including how those controls support secure Microsoft 365 and Copilot adoption.

• Experience using PowerShell, Microsoft Graph, or similar automation approaches to create repeatable deployment and configuration patterns.

• Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the ability to resolve complex issues and reduce recurrence through documentation, automation, and process improvement.

• Experience mentoring engineers and leading small teams or technical workstreams in a collaborative environment.

• Ability to estimate tasks and workstreams effectively, identify delivery assumptions and risks, and partner with Sales and Project Management on planning.

• Ability to create and maintain reusable runbooks, technical documentation, reference configurations, and internal knowledge assets.

Nice to Have Experience

• Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, or agent-based solutions, including readiness, governance, security, and adoption considerations.

• Microsoft certifications such as MD-102, MS-102, MS-721, MS-700, SC-401, SC-300, SC-200, AB-620, AB-100, AB-650, AB-730, AB-731, or AZ-104.

• Experience with Microsoft Sentinel and integration across the Microsoft security ecosystem.

• Experience with Power Automate, Power Apps, or other low-code automation capabilities.

• Project lead, technical lead, or workstream leadership experience.

• Experience with migration and governance tools such as BitTitan, ShareGate, AvePoint, or Quest.
